Depends on the individual. Austria-Hungary wasn't ethnically uniform as you can see from his ancestral surnames and locations.

that map messed up horribly with Slovaks. Def. not a ethnic Slovak, but yeah it is just one sample, but it also represents a big part of the Austrian population. Some closer to the Croatian border are probably closer to Croatians than the German core and those closer to Germany the opposite.
