    Both were idealists, though.

It was what happened when Nationalism met alliance games and military arrogance. Europe was a powder keg one spark from going off at this time, and if it wasn't the assassination, it would have been something else sooner than later.

Nobody wants to mention the elephant in the room...What really started world war 1 was European blood lust and nationalism joining forces at just the right time. Every single army that was deployed in WW1 was greated by fawning populace, and the war was initially incurred feeligs of excitement and festivities...very much like the trump movement and the pepe memes, it was very festival oriented. Then the reality of dying cheap in a muddy trench, ridde with sherapnel hit too close to home, and only then (but still, slowly slowly) did anti-war sentiment kick in.

European people before WW1 thought war was a darwinian good thing and like an 'dance' of the nations. The reason for this silly mindset was the professionalization of the army post-Napoleon. When 95% of men dont have to take up arms, they can easily romanticize it. After World wars, was a wake up call and now Europe and western's thinkers have wisened to the nightmare scenarios, and have consciously put effort to replace this darwinian 'dance' with things like FIFA World Cup, etc.

Divine punishment for switching out the worship of God for the worship of nations and kings..

    Practitioner instigator

    Helmuth von Moltke . Dec.1912

“I consider a war inevitable—the sooner, the better."

    Ideological instigator

    Kaiser Wilhelm Dec.1912

"The coming war is the last battle between Teutons and Slavs which would find the Anglo-Saxons on the side of the Slavs and the Gauls...[England] wanted to forbid other Powers to defend their interests...with the sword. … England will undoubtedly stand behind France and Russia against Germany out of hatred and envy. The imminent struggle for existence which the Germanic peoples of Europe (Austria, Germany) will have to fight out against the Slavs (Russians) and their Latin (Gallic) supporters finds the Anglo-Saxons on the side of the Slavs. Reason: petty envy, fear of our growing big."

"Chapter 2 of the Great Migrations...is over. Now comes Chapter 3, the Germanic peoples' fight for their existence against Russo-Gallia. No further conference can smooth this over, for it is not a question of high politics, but one of race...for what is at issue is whether the Germanic race is to be or not to be in Europe."

    Philosophical Incitement

German geopolitics was influenced by the
ideas of Friedrich Ratzel (1844-1904). Ratzel,
who is often regarded as the founder of modern,
systematic political geography, was influenced by
Darwin's theory of evolution. Ratzel argued that
states, like organisms, obey laws of evolution,
with the principle of the survival of the fittest
    underlying competition between states. Strong
states prosper and expand, while weak states
decline and die. Thus Rudolf Kiellen
(1846-1922), who invented the term geopolitik,
described geopolitics as "the science which con-
ceives of the State as a geographical organism or as
    a phenomenon in space".

The organic analogy underlies several of the
key concepts of German geopolitics. Central to
German geopolitical thought is the idea of
lebensraum or living space. Expansion of territory
under its control could help to ensure the long-run
survival and competitive position of a state, and expansion was seen as a critical key to a state's
growth and development. For post-World War

The Haushofer’s school offered to Germany to realize its tellurocratic nature and to unify Europe on the continental basis; to accomplish that it was necessary to conclude an alliance with the Russia and to strengthen the alliance with Japan and thus destroy the world thalassocracy – the alliance of England, USA and France. The consolidation of all Land Powers was the only way to get rid of the Sea Powers and the their temptation to organize the world space on the thalassocratic model.
