Restoring the closedown ?
A lot of countries used to have a little sign-off ceremony late in the evening - usually with the anthem being played and a broadcaster wishing the viewers/listeners a good night.
In our 24 hour economy this has been phased out but wouldn't it be a good idea, since it's usually just programs being repeated at night (that can be watched online anyways- at least here- or commercial drivel), to return to the sign-off broadcast ?

i remember this from my childhood. i always hated it, not only because i dislike national anthems but because it meant there would be no further programming.

Well... and when it comes to the anthem. I think that in these days of globalisation and multiculturalism a closedown with the anthem could be sound political statement: this is where globalisation stops and the country takes over.

As a child i remember Jimmy Young on radio 2 signing off his programme with a little tune, then saying TTFN (ta ta for now)

The 3 broadcast channels we could get when I was little (Channels 22 and 40 out of Springfield, MA and Channel 3 out of Hartfod, CT) each had a different signoff, featuring a different patriotic song just after midnight. (Yes, I shoulda been in bed)
They'd each begin the day's programming with the national anthem just before 6.
The programs have expanded to fill the entire 24-hours, but there is still only about 14 - 16 hours of actual content.
