My mom dislikes Germans and she used to be ashamed of her German maiden name (Meller).

She was coping with it, claiming that it is a Swedish surname. When I did some research and found out that it is Low German, I told her it is Flemish in order not to make her upset. She likes the Flemish idea.

Nobody wants to be German or even part-German in my region. Even though many people are.

I had an ex-girlfriend Fischer and she never claimed any German heritage. One of my classmates in high school was Hirschfeld and also never claimed being German (although he is descended from a Prussian general*). We have lots of people with German surnames who deny having anything to do with Germany.
