More accurate is: Northern Italians are almost southern French, southern Italians are almost Cypriots. But neither group ever really is "fully" reaching those, it's just the most accurate way of defining the clinal nature of Italian DNA.

Anyhow if people want to see the differences as per a professional study, see here, which specifically says that the clinal nature in Italy is in fact due to more West Asian ancestry as you go south, reaching 28% "Caucasian" in southern Italy, the highest in Europe, plus 5% North African in Sicily.

Here is a PCA plot. Of all the sampled, the most "southern" were Catania in eastern Sicily, then Agrigento in western Sicily, and then Cosenza in Calabria.

The people from Catania are those who are likely shifting toward Cyprus, and would be genetically more "south" of any other Europeans (Maltese were not sampled and would be the only exception).

My family is from both regions. My father is from Agrigento and my mother is from Catania.
