    Default Maria or Marie as a male name

    The name Maria or Marie was sometimes used as a male name.
    This was historically the case in many Central European countries.
    In countries with strong Catholic traditions, it signified patronage of the Virgin Mary.

    I knew a guy who was called maria but only in middle name. A Austrian Guy, I think I dont know any guy who is called maria with first name, but marie in france is possible. Actually the french have a few such names where it could be both male or female.

    Also true for French names. Jean-Marie is a very common name.

    It's common practice in spain, actually I have 2 uncles a 1 cousin called jesús.
    It was surprising to me that that was seen as weird and surprising in the rest of the (christian) world.

    In central and north Sardinia it's used as second name for males, not very common however, more common in the past than today, while it's not used at all in south Sardinia, it's quite rare in Italy.

    Antonio Maria (in Italian) -> Antòni Maria (in Sardinian)
    Giovanni Maria -> Juanne Maria
    Pietro Maria
    -> Pedru Maria
    Paolo Maria
    ->Paulu Maria
    Giuseppe Maria
    -> Zuseppe Maria
    Luigi Maria
    -> Luisi Maria

    it's more common the masculine version :

    Mario (in Italian) -> Mariu (in Sardinian)
    Mariano -> Mariane
    Non Auro, Sed Ferro, Recuperanda Est Patria (Not by Gold, But by Iron, Is the Nation to be Recovered) - Marcus Furius Camillus (Roman General)
