Researchers got 214 newlywed couples to fill out a daily diary for 14 days
They had to say whether they'd had sex that day, and how satisfied they were in their relationship, marriage and sex life in that given moment
Most had sex every three days, but their 'afterglow' (feeling satisfied and stimulated by one sexual encounter) lingered for two days
Those who felt more stimulated by sex were happier in their relationship six months later

Sex triggers a 48-hour 'afterglow' that helps couples to bond, new research reveals.

While we already knew sex induces the 'cuddle hormone' oxytocin, scientists were not sure how long the effect lasted.


Now, researchers at Florida State University have concluded that the lovey-dovey feeling lingers for two whole days - and that this feeling is linked with long-term relationship quality.

WHAT IS THE CUDDLE HORMONE?
The hormone oxytocin is released in our bodies in various social situations and our bodies create it at high concentrations during positive social interactions such as falling in love, experiencing an orgasm or giving birth and breastfeeding.
Oxytocin is also released during labor - triggering the production of breast milk - and floods the brain during breastfeeding, helping mother and baby bond.
Previous research has shown that it helps diffuse relationship squabbles and leads to married men physically distancing themselves from attractive women.
