Default Holy Roman Empire Central Europe and European Empires.

At one time Germany,Switzerland, Austria, parts of France and Northern Italy were all one country under the Holy Roman Empire. Plus, much of Eastern Europe at time were part of the Prussian Empire, Russian Empire and Austro-Hungarian Empire. Just wanted to point out that Europeans in general have much history in common. Maybe we should return to a giant European country. Or may be that is what the EU is?

Italy was only nominally part of that fake Empire. We kicked the HRE for good.

No but we should never forget our history. Not many people know that parts of France,Switzerland,Germany,Austria and Italy were all one country.

the animosity that occured during this time between all the different feifdoms was fairly intense. germans are good at making then breaking stuff but when it comes to leadership they have been historically not very good

Once Charlemagne died it all fell apart. His children could not keep it together. Charlemagne was obessed with conquering Italy because he wanted to try to emulate the roman empire.

That map is quite wrong, Sardinia is marked as part of Holy Roman Empire, a thing that never happened, in 1100 Sardinia was in the middle of the Judical epoch, the island was ruled by 4 Judikes (Judges) since the end of VIIIth century, the Judikes were the heirs of the Roman-Byzantine governors (Judices Provinciae = Judges of the Province), this age ended in 1420, when the island was conquered by the kingdom of Aragona. There is never mention of Holy Roman Empire in Sardinian history, the Judikes that ruled over Sardinia in almost seven centuries always reiterated that they governed the island on behalf of the Emperor of Byzantium, even if the island since the end of VIIIth century was de facto independent because the Arabs infested the sea routes cutting out every contact between the island and the central government.

    I was thinking the same...

Also the Republic of Venice and Genoa were already indipendent at that time...

I personally think that the HRE influence is overestimated in North Italy (in part thx to the Alps)

As someone said, it was mostly a nominative empire. And wasn't it most of the time an austrian Empire ? It had a pig power but never on all its territory. Even in Germany, all the cities, principalities, electors were very independant or even fighting the emperor.
