they start clashing sooner or later, and their relationship becomes very toxic

For the most part, opposites do not attract. Why be in a relationship with another, with whom you have little in common? It would just cause tension.

Personality-wise opposites clearly do not attract for obvious reasons, thinking they do would be a fallacy.

Looks-wise I would argue that again opposites do not attract. We have a narcisstic element in our way of thinking when it comes to selecting our partners. On the other hand, reproduction with a partner genetically dissimilar to ourselves
would diversify our gene pool.

Perhaps it's more a case of complementary differences attracting than diametrical ideological opposition.

I mean, at a very fundamental level, a cock complements a vajayjay, doesn't it? Or maybe not.

Physically, men and women tend to find their opposites attractive, don't they?

But when it comes to ideas, that's where opposites can become rather repulsive.

As I know quite a few people who are the embodiment of opposites attract - not in looks but personality, background & education - maybe it's only a myth for insecure individuals, ill-educated/ill-traveled individuals, and/or even sheeple who hang out among similarly minded people least they end up being embarrassed or made to feel more inferior than they are? The only true issue where opposites would repulsive would be severe differences in cultural or religious ideals... but then again there's plenty of mixed-race couples around. I know the insecure / ill-traveled sort well, my colleague is such an individual, and I find her/them incredibly boring.

I'd be bored to tears if my partner was rather similar to me. But then I'm well educated, well traveled & far from insecure.

I mean most of those people who are opposites attract have been married or involved together for quite a long time. While some friend & her husband, who were very much alike, divorced in 3 years. As she put it, they had "outgrown each other". Bet they had. Probably got rather tiresome seeing themselves not only in the mirror but reflected in their partner.
