XOTETЬ is pronounced "Hah-tetz." How is a z sound softening the previous letter?

Not pointless! Gives a softer pronounciation and will be incorrect without it. Words will sound funny without it.

She clearly says "TЬ" makes a "z" sound.

Sorry I am on phone and having trouble playing it but Rumata's pronounciation is correct on that word.
EDIT: Was able to see the video now. Yeah with her type of voice it does not give a decent pronounciation and comes off squeeky to me even lol. Rely on Rumata's examples in this case.

no, she's using some dialect pnonsuation and pronounce soft "Ц" (TS) instead soft "T".
