You have some good points. I only have to correct you that Romans indeed exterminated an entire people (basically committed genocide) and those people were the Carthaginians. They simply feared them too much to let them live, as they were the only people to have nearly destroyed Rome.

Again those who surrendered (common folk) were spared. Carthage was somewhat unique in the sense of their aristocracy and hierarchy so Rome probably made a special case on them.
