In Australia they called Southern Europeans wogs. A lot of Italians and Greeks call themselves wogs and I don't think many people find it offensive. They appear to take it as more of a joke. It is the same with calling British people pommy bastards and Irish Paddies. A lot of Aussie humour is much of the sledging variety and you have to let it wash off you because most of the time they are just joking.

Anyway people like Italians and Greeks etc are very much integrated into the Australian way of life and no one really takes the wog label too seriously.

If you want to get a feel for the Australian sense of humour look at Barry Humphries (Dame Edna Everage) and Paul Hogan. It is very irreverent and more a dry sense of humour.

Who cares if they're integrated, into the Aussie way of life. In America in the early part of the 20th century, they were seen as undesirable day laborers similar to how illegal Mexicans are seen today.

This includes Eastern Europeans too.

Most populations have faced prejudice in the past and it was much harder in the 1800s where you didn't have Big Brother looking out for you. You had to be a tough breed to survive. People these days are such wimps. Anyway Australia is much less PC than most other western countries.

Yes people just loved keeping different groups down. Most groups that came to the US and other countries had it difficult initially. It required tenacity and guts to pull yourself up. I've never looked on it as something to be ashamed of. It makes you realise that you come from a group of people with a lot of resilience.
