Default A Journey Through Old Bosnia

    A Journey Through Old Bosnia

"The profound solitude, the virgin-like nature of the vast wilderness, are broken here and there by Oriental towns, medieval castles and keeps, and widely scattered,
picturesque villages, wherein dwell a dignified and proud people, of inflexible courage, ever ready for war or song; for never, until the advent of the Austrian Occupation,
has the clang of arms been silenced here between the Crescent and the Cross, between serfs and masters. Begs, Kapetans, Waywodes, Serdars, Glavares, have all fought
here without let or hindrance, and the whole country still rings with songs whose burden is the prowess of ancestors, or the sweetness of love."
-János de Asbóth, An official tour through Bosnia and Herzegovina (1890)

"The Bosniacs themselves speak of the other side of the Save as ‘Europe,’ and they are right; for to all intents and purposes a five minutes’ voyage transports you into Asia.
[...]Thrace, Macedonia, the shores of the Aegean, Stamboul itself, have lost or never displayed many Oriental customs and costumes; but Bosnia remains the chosen land of
Mahometan Conservatism, the Goshen of the faithful, ennobled by the tombs of martyrs, and known in Turkish annals as the ‘Lion that guards the gates of Stamboul.’ "
-Sir Arthur Evans, Through Bosnia and the Herzegovina on foot during the insurrection (1875)

So we were considered bigger Ottomans than the Turks themselves.

Yugoslav partisans believer in the chetnik ideology, but could not display it openly because otherwise they couldn't recruit naive Croats and Bosniaks, which were necessary for victory. We shouldn't make a difference between a Serb and a chetnik, the two are exactly the same thing.

Bosnia was an interesting country, the drive from zagreb to sarajevo then from sarajevo to Montenegro covers pretty much the whole country, am i right?
The country only needs some faster bigger highways. The rest was beautiful country.

    Indeed.
    It goes on to say,
Fanaticism has struck its deepest roots among her renegade population, and reflects itself even in their dress. In no other European province of Turkey is the veiling of women so strictly attended to. It is said that not long ago the fine egg-shaped turbans of the Janissaries might still be found in Bosnia, and the Maulouka, the most precious of all mantles, which had died out elsewhere, long survived among these Bosnian Tories. As to the introduction of fezzes, the Imperial order almost provoked a revolt here; and to this day among Mahometans the fez is almost confined to officials, the rest of the believers going about in the capacious turbans of the East.

The turban + mustache was a classic back then, anyone want to bring it back
The moron who forbade turbans and replaced it by fez should burn in hell seriously.

The Ottoman Sultan actually did that. Husein kapetan Gradašćević did not accept this order, he wore a turban still, and so did the Bosniaks supporting him.
