X-Men Movie New Mutants to Start Filming This Summer

It didn’t take long for studio executives to realize the success of Logan and decide that a whole new crop of X-Men movies is ripe for the taking. Writer and director Josh Boone’s new X-Men feature New Mutants may start filming as early as this summer. It’s no surprise that 20th Century Fox is moving ahead with multiple X-Men projects after Deadpool and Logan, but starting as early as this summer is a welcomed surprise.

Given that Hugh Jackman is apparently done with his Wolverine character, it’s time to introduce a new crop of mutants and “pass the baton” if you will. Based on the popular comic book series of the same name, New Mutants follows a group of graduates from Professor Xavier’s School for the Gifted, bringing a younger demographic to the X-Men franchise. With pre-production planning on New Mutants well underway, plot and character details are slowly coming to surface thanks to reveals by Boone. We know we can expect to follow mutant graduates Magik, Wolfsbane, Mirage, Cannonball, Sunspot, and Warlock as they grapple with their powers and villains – like comic book baddie Demon Bear. Boone’s previous work on young adult film The Fault in Our Stars gives indication on the film’s tone and style. It was deduced, based on previous X-Men films, that shooting would be expected to occur in Canada, though hints pointed to New Mutants actually filming in the States.

A report by My Entertainment World confirms that filming is indeed set to take place Stateside. New Mutants is scheduled to begin filming in Massachusetts on June 4th. Considering the director was scouting in Boston for filming locations just two weeks ago, and multiple X-Men films slated for filming in Canada, it’s no surprise that this recent hub of film production activity has been locked down for filming.

As far as further details, it’s still a little murky. We think that Maisie Williams is set to be part of the cast. James McAvoy is supposed to return as Charles Xavier. But right now, nothing is 100% except for the fact that New Mutants is definitely happening.

The recordings will be on the same day as X-men, maybe that means the films have been based at the same time.
