Irish and Italians are close in the USA many marry each other due to them sharing the same religion. I am not sure what Australia is like but it is common here.

The same happened in England, with Irish Catholic immigrants being absorbed into English Catholic working class communites, and the children who grew up speaking with English accents were fully regarded as English.
