Yes but this is not always the case, there are many exceptions. Geographical location plays a role in pigmentation as well. There was also inter-caste mixing that is generally not documented/not talked about. So it is likely that most people of a certain caste had some number of ancestors from a different caste.

Why was the Caste system set up? It seems like a segregated class system but more extreme than most cultures.
