no offense but till new geographical discoveries (New Land/Americas) Atlantic Ocean shores were empty and all communication routes led to China (Asia) and to Middle East, so West Europe back then was a big hole
(just to clarify forgotten facts)
and China is working fine to recover old glory (new Silk Road with two hubs: Łódź Poland for 16 Central European countries and Köln for rest of european continent)
