This is fairly common. Italian-Americans, I'd say, definitively became American around the time of WWII. Many Italian-Americans were admirers of Mussolini and Italian fascism prior to the American entry into the war. Mussolini understandably projected a positive image of the Italy not just to Italian-Americans, but Americans at large. That charged virtually overnight when the US entered the war. Italian-Americans willingly sided with and fought for America, just like other established ethnic groups in this country.

Yup, my Grandfather whom was born in the USA of immigrant parents from Italy was American as they come. He was also involved in intelligence for the Army and was sent to Tehran in the 1950s to spy on the Russians. He did not disclose this until a couple years before he died.
