I was in Venice once, no one guessed me as anything. Only once we talked to a older man, and he was complimenting my friend on his good italian skills and was asking me why i cant speak italian and said "is your native language german too" and i said yes (eventhough its not true but didnt wanted to explain the whole story) and he said "thats bad that you dont speak italian you should take your friend as example"
