Arranged marriages are basically business transactions. It's better to be shunned by a family that views you as a bargaining chip. Not much love there if they can't accept a 'no, I don't want to marry this person I barely know." It's not surprising that cultures that practice arranged marriages tend to come from the crappiest places in the world but enjoy the fruits of socities that are more individual minded and merit based (cultures with arranged marriages are nepotistic as all hell), such as penicillin that cures the husbands of arranged marriages of their STD acquired from seeing prostitutes.

it has pros and cons, in the modern invidual based society family structure is more or less destroyed and replaced by singles, patchwork families, gay couples etc.
