    Default Question about Cape Town...

How many Europeans are there in Cape Town? Is it a city that was founded mainly by negroes and mulatto or Europeans?

    Cape Town population: 3,736,000

    Racial demographics:

    42.4% "Coloured"
    38.6% "Black African"
    15.7% "White"
    1.4% "Asian or Indian"
    1.9% other

    Therefore, 586 552 white people.

Cape Town was founded in the 1600's a refreshment station for ships to and from the Far East. It was founded by the Dutch.

The first Europeans to discover the Cape were the Portuguese, with Bartholomeu Dias arriving in 1488 after journeying south along the west coast of Africa. The next recorded European sighting of the Cape was by Vasco da Gama in 1497 while he was searching for a route that would lead directly from Europe to Asia.

Cape Town was founded in 1652 by Governor Jan van Riebeeck as a supply station on the Dutch East India Company's sea route to the East. In 1795 the British occupied the city. It was returned to the Dutch in 1803 but recaptured in 1806 by the British, who established Cape of Good Hope Colony with Cape Town as capital.

    Thanks.

So there are some areas where European communities live in this city, right?

Like any city in any country across the world, there are fancier (and more expensive) neighbourhoods and the shittier, poorer areas. The exclusive areas are historically inhabited mostly by white people. If a black person can afford to live in these places, they do. Money talks and money has no colour.

Here is a more "exclusive" neighbourhood of Cape Town.

The really shitty places are inhabited by black people. No education, no work, living on a government grant. This is the less glorious part of Cape Town.

Two faces of the same city.
