Kotor Bay in Montenegro has been part of Venetian and Austrian Dalmatia, with ethnic Croatian population in that region. Many Croats feel it should have remained part of Croatia rather than Montenegro, I think that's why it seems so familiar.

Dubrovnik is nice but not for everyone. It's incredibly expensive and full of tourists, and isolated from rest of the country. The islands nearby are quite beautiful and peaceful tough
But I think the hype of Dubrovnik is too much.

It's how I see much of the planets urban areas. So no slur against Croatia. I prefer the rivers with their natural wetlands in place, coastlines whether clay or rock face or beach closer to their natural state, trees or dunes in place. Boardwalks with their concrete do little for me.
But as you say, many of those towns have been in place a long time with defenses to stop invaders. Nice from the street level.

I understand you (more than you can imagine ). Coastal cities of Croatia with sole exception of Pula (which is super green) are extremely dense and urban, with narrow streets, lot of stone and little greenery (Dalmatia is naturally quite arid region). The North Adriatic region is more green tough, and has lot more rainfall than Dalmatia.

For you I would recomend Northern (Panonnian) Croatia where spaces are open, there is more green and less urbanization. For example my favorite Northern Croatian city Karlovac is set on 4 rivers! And most of them are in completely natural state.
I understand why people like mediterranean, but I always wanted to move to Panonnian plain and enjoy wide open spaces with bit less urbanization. So now in Hungary I'm very satisfied.

Only difference is that summers are lot more nicer on the coast, with light breeze and crystal clear waters of Adriatic that are really hard to match

Bump! If anyone visited Croatia I'd like to read their replies here.
Croatian cities are really beautiful, we were blessed to have a country like that.
