The Unique Situation of Greece in Eastern Europe.

I am curious to what the average standard of loving is for the Average Greek from after the Marshall Plan until now as an EU Member. I am looking at UN Human index and Greece is ranked higher than the Eastern Communist block countries with the exception of Czech Republic.

So what is so special about Greece being the Only Eastern European NATO country(until 1990) and benefiting from the Marshall Plan.

I really am not sure how unique they really are except that they were able to obtain money cheaply through the years to keep the bloated public sector to function and cushion their standard of living.

Perhaps it was not that easy for the communist block countries to do this??

Why did Churchill stand up to Stalin and say we want Greece to remain under Western influence and basically screwed over the Czechs and others.
It might also have to do with Geo Political reason since Greece was close to British MENA.

Churchill knew damn well that Stalin was not going to allow free elections in those countries.

I can only think the GEO politics of Greece's location is the only reason Britain sent troops into Greece in 1944 to crush the communist.

Geopolitical reasons, Greece is an area that connects Western Europe with the Middle East. Greece also put up a legitimate resistance against the Axis forces and the country was severely damaged after the war.

• Greece's best economic years were actually after Marshal plan and before entering EU, not after.

• Greece, unlike the rest of the Balkan countries was never under communist. It did fight about it , with thousands of casualties (civil war), however, communists lost.
That's what makes us different with most of Eastern Europ

• If I'm not mistaken, Yugoslavs later received aid from USA.
