Honestly I'm just getting sick of it. English names that have been around for centuries are getting pushed aside in favor of their native equivalents because of "cultural sensitivity" or something.
Some of the worst offenders are Kolkata (instead of the much nicer-looking Calcutta), Guangzhou (instead of Canton, which makes much more sense in English), and Iran (instead of the beautiful Persia).
The way I see it, traditional English place names are part of our cultural and linguistic heritage. (The same is true of other languages as well - when writing/speaking German, I use Pennsylvanien and Schaldewage instead of Pennsylvania and Scalloway)
We shouldn't give up part of our language just to be "international" or "culturally sensitive" or whatever.
Wikipedia is one of the worst offenders, using Helsingřr, Kraków, and Livorno instead of the proper English names Elsinore, Cracow, and Leghorn.
What do you guys think?
