Default Are the Dutch a form of Germans?

Dutch sounds like Deutsch. Deutsch is the native german word for German. Germans say Deutsch. And Dutch sounds like a variation of Deutsch. You can also understand them almost when they speak.

I basically consider the Dutch language to be a variation of German. From the objective point of view of linguistics, (Lowland) German and Dutch exist along a dialect-continuum, separated by nothing but arbitrary political boundaries. I speak German and I am learning Dutch for a prospective lover of mine. It is hard to not fall back on German when I don't know how to say something in Dutch. To me, Dutch is just German with some Anglic influence and funny spelling.

They're not Germans, they're essentially an amalgamation of Salian Franks and Frisians

Dutch, Deutsch and Duits are all essentially words that descend from *ţiudiskaz, a proto-Germanic word that means "of ones own people"

Interesting Idea, but not really, the word Dane is not related to the words Dutch/Deutsch/Duits

Dane comes from a proto-Germanic word *daniz, which is a tribal name, and not related to the word *ţiudiskaz

As well, the languages are not closely related within the Germanic family, Danish is East North Germanic as opposed to West Germanic like Dutch and German

As well, within the West Germanic languages, High German (from which the "German" identity arose) is an Irminonic langauge, and really all High German langauges are equivalent of an Irminonic Langauge family. Dutch is Istvaeonic, same as Frankish and Old Saxon. Frisian is Ingvaeonic, same as English.

But Frisians are Germans, there is even a region in Germany called Ostfriesland https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostfriesland *Easternfrisianland. And there are some jokes about frisians (friesen)

Nothing's cast in stone yet, but I've been corresponding with a Dutch woman for some time. My mother's side is predominantly English with significant amounts of Dutch, Scottish, Welsh, and French Huguenot. My father's side is predominantly Irish with a smaller amount of Alsatian German and Welsh. I am only ~ 1/8th German, but I have been learning German off-and-on since 13 and I am certified fluent (C1) by the Goethe Institute.
