Nope, the French protectorate was very beneficial to the Berber identity/culture in Morocco, it is after the independence that the arab elite started to systematically arabize everything, from education, to music, to city names.., they even stated that Berbers were old Arab immigrants from Yemen and Syria lol

I think it's a feature common to all Maghreb. But Lyautey was a big fan of Arabic, not Amazigh, culture. And you know that most of the French people call all Maghrebians "Arabs" undistinctly.
