Many parts of Canada are more similar to their adjacent parts of the US, than that part of the US to the other end of the country.
Canada doesn't feel foreign. Maybe Quebec.

Americans almost exclusively refer to themselves as Americans, Canadians often refer to themselves as "North Americans" in order to tie themselves to America in their self reference. This shows more or less the imitation they are of the U.S and how their own identity is tied to the U.S but also shows that it definitely is not the other way around.
