Default When the Yankees Invaded America

As recalled by 101-year-old Confederate veteran Julius Howell in a 1947 speech. “We fought for states’ rights,” says the man who enlisted at age 16 after his slightly older childhood friends were killed in the Battle of Williamsburg. He talks about “why we fought” at around 14:30. His Virginia Cavalier accent is probably what Lee and Jefferson must have sounded like, says one comment.

    1860s

Julius Howell enlisted at 16 to fight for the Confederacy in 1862. In this 1947 recording in DC, Howell at age 101, recalls his Civil War exploits as a cavalryman at Petersburg and Richmond and his memory of the assassination of President Lincoln from a Union POW camp.

Well, slavery was a great evil and it was necessary to eradicate it. I find it difficult to believe it would've been eradicated so quickly without force.

But people in the South still resent the Civil War and "uppity Yankee Northerners", I remember my ex-gf's grandpa used to rant about "those damned yankees coming down here and telling us what to do," all the time. The Civil War is just history everywhere else in the US, but in the South, it's still very much a part of the collective consciousness.

I don't see Southern nostalgia or support for the Confederacy as equating to support for slavery or necessarily racism, though they may be intertwined, it's more an expression of regional and ethnic pride (Yes, American Southerners are almost their own ethnic group).

The civil war was very hard on lots of folks in the south. People lost everything and had to start all over.

There are crews in New Orleans taking down confederate statues this week of General P.G.T. Beauregard, President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee and the battle of liberty place monument.

All in the name of political correctness.

No matter how you feel about the Civil War, it is undisputed that the Confederates were great soldiers. They were outnumbered by huge numbers but held their own for many years, and fought tooth and nail. Pound for pound they were better soldiers than the Union.

The civil war is often called "the war of Northern aggression" down here. And you are right, it's history for everyone else but the south, it's part of our collective consciousness. Many people in the south still flaunt the confederate battle flag on license plates, shirts, hats etc. it stands for southern pride down here. But political correctness is having its way with the south lately. There is a crew in New Orleans this week tearing down statues of Confederate heroes.

That is tragic. History is sacred.

Robert E. Lee is one of the greats. My favorite out of them is GENERAL P.G.T. BEAUREGARD. He was a white French Creole from the parish were I'm from (St. Bernard Parish) which is the neighboring parish to Orleans parish which is the city of New Orleans.

But get this, the mayor of New Orleans, Mitch Landrieu, he is a white French Creole just like General Beauregard and he's the one appeasing the liberals by ordering the statues to be taken down. Sellout. Selling out his own people from history for outsiders. That's sad imo.

Yes, history is sacred. They are erasing history in the name of political correctness. It's terrible.

In my bones, I feel one day in either the near or distant future, the confederacy will rise again against the American government. It may be during another civil war or some other event inside the US. Many southerners still cling to the idea of Dixie.
