Not to mention the bread prices .. 1 piece of bread cost like less than half a cent .

Also you're failing to see why the Egyptian authorities invest so much in the army. Firstly, because of the recent political turmoils and instability in Egypt. Secondly, out of fear of Israel. This does not indicate a well established strong state but one that is still trying to find some solid ground.

Army size doesn't really matter in this scenario since Israel has weapons of mass destruction, better strategic allies and a far more well trained and equipped army with higher moral.
