Default Why are Turkic languages so close?

I mean if you look at the Turkic languages, you can say that each major branch is a language of its own, while the "languages" in it are merely dialects, for e,g, take a look at the Oghuz Group, and all the languages in it are mutually intelligible (Gagauz/Balkan-Anatolian Turkish/Azerbaijani Turkish/Turkmen etc).

This is rather different from most major languages families, be it Indo-European or Sino-Tibetan or anything else. Why is that?
