How did Germans avoid the negative stereotypes in the US?

I have read that Slavic people like Russians or poles in the US, along with other Slavic people dealt with stereotypes of the mainly Anglo originated white folks

Germans on contrary were respected by white majority, in spite of the fact that Slavic influence strikes in German physical traits, culture and mentality

Other Europeans who suffered during the previous 2 centuries were the Irish (known as "white negros"), South Europeans (mostly south Italians but Greeks as well) and Scandinavians (they were stereotyped as alcoholic and were not treated well)

During WW2 people with German as their house language werd shunned too. Earlier Germans probably were seen as foreign non-Anglos too and not seen as equals.

Well, they definitely tried to give it an ethnic angle.



It should be pointed out that Germans are the largest portion of white Americans, much more numerous than the actual Anglos. Probably the reason it didn't stick.

Not true at all German-Americans are the largest percentage of the White population only in the upper midwest. Not in the South, Northeast or West Coast. And most German-Americans outside of those areas are mixed with other European ethnicities by now while the ones in the upper midwest are mixed with Scandinavians usually.

I've read negative comments about Germans at the turn of the 20th century (a journalist referred to them as thieves) but it doesn't appear significant until the US entered WW1. Many changed their surnames. Trump's father would tell people his ancestry was Swedish. That is what Trump thought until recently. His paternal grandparents came from the Palatinate.
