They didnt at all, the German language was forcibly suppressed in the US, and Germans were occasionally lynched. They had it worse than the Irish in a lot of ways.

During WW2 people with German as their house language werd shunned too. Earlier Germans probably were seen as foreign non-Anglos too and not seen as equals.

There are hardly any traditional German speaking communities in the USA outside of certain pockets of the midwest, so most German Americans don't even speak the language or follow the culture. In California, the closest we have is a town called Solvang (Danish-American) but most of the people there don't speak Danish.

They have "Little Italy" in California too, my friend lives there

But German was still a common house language in the US in the mid 20th century. German-Americans spoke German for many generations before finally Anglicising completely. At least, I have seen a documentary where a German-American woman explained how they were regarded with suspicion by the local culture for speaking German at home during WWII.

Not sure about Segata Sanchiro's statement, though. As far as I recall, German-Americans weren't placed in internment camps like Japanese-Americans were.
