I'm disappointed in Aliens:Covenant. It was bad. Despite all the technological advancements in the film industry sci-fi/horror/action films have become worse. I refer to this sad reality as the Lucas Effect. Lucas' second incarnation as a film director with the Star Wars pre-sequels ushered in an age of special effects over story and character development. You can't have a successful film (successful in that it survives the test of time) without the audience having an emotional investment in the characters. This is why Alien still holds up as a great film. You have an opportunity to know the characters well enough to care about their fate. There is too much time now given to special effects and over the top action sequences. It takes away from the film. Instead of moving the story along the special effects/action sequences become the story and the consequence is we don't care about the characters.
Awesome.
Not awesome.
btw, that first scene in the trailer where they're all together enjoying each other's company was deleted from the film. I watched the deleted scene and it was a great scene to not only allow the audience to get to know the characters in a normal situation but to also reveal the tension between particular characters, which prepares the audience for the tension to come to the surface later in the film and so it doesn't seem forced.
