Crete was a part of the Eastern Roman Empire, not the Western Roman Empire. I wish that Greece had been made a part of the Western Roman Empire though.

Anyway, the only succesors of the Eastern Roman Empire/Byzantine Empire are the Greeks. For the most and important part, the language of the Empire was Greek and the Greek culture was tried to be spread.
