middle east and europe are geographical terms and both are heterogeneus. some middle easterns are closer to some europeans or vice versa as i think.
syria has many bedouin tribes, so less mediterrenean. but other mediterrenean countries share many things.

That's because of religion that made Islamic societies so different from Christian/European ones. If the Levant/Anatolia had remained Christian I believe the a significant part of the European countries of the Mediterranean basin would identify more with them than with far northern European ones.

In some aspects I'd feel closer to Turkey, in others closer to Finland.
Asia Minor was part of Greece for millenia and lots of archeological sites, toponyms etc are still Greek.
But do I feel closer to Islamofascist Turks, and their middle eastern culture? no Their whole psychosynthesis of Muslims is different.

to my conational: i don t want to be ofensive (aka ive adquired parents from the south; and i like the climate and cusine of the south, but i d prefer to live where i am from, and if offered a good job i wont esitate to move in sardinia or sicily.. but the problem is.. that wont happen ever as there there isn t work.. or no?)

Why do I get the feeling this thread, for all its good intentions, will inevitably end up being a 10+ page shitstorm?
To answer the question though, it's Christianity, specifically "Christian values" set forth from the Renaissance and later the Enlightenment.
