I was hoping Óttar would weigh in on this.

A friend of mine wrote a very lengthy paper (entitled "Already God") on Sadhus, and I wrote my MA thesis on classical and medieval Buddhist and Hindu Tantra. My friend's paper came to the conclusion that many poor people decide to take up the life of a Sadhu. Indeed, they appear somewhat like homeless people in the US. It is generally believed by scholars that a sect known as the Kapalikas (skull-bearers) died off in the 5th century. There is one guru who has revived the order and he has initiated some westerners as well. I don't know to what extent this particular group performs cannibalistic rituals. The guru has his own tent at Kumbha Melas. I may pay him a visit sometime in the future.

The Aghori Sadhus do indeed eat corpses. I saw a video where an Aghori Sadhu dragged a corpse out of the Ganges back to his tent, took a meat-cleaver, hacked off an arm, and began eating it raw.

There are 5 Ms in tantra, mamsa (meat), matsya (fish), madya (wine), mudraa (fermented grain), and maithuna (ritual intercourse). These things are only supposed to be partaken of in a ritual context, and I doubt that partaking of these would have the desired psychological effect on a westerner as they are meant to shock the sensibilities in order to transcend social taboos. Inasmuch as they are an aspect of ritual deity identification (devaahamkaara), they may be useful. Kali is called "She who is fond of liquor and the flesh of beasts." She is depicted with Her hair unbound as this is the custom for Hindu women who are menstruating, i.e. She is constantly in a state of ritual pollution. One of Her aspects is Vindhyavasini "She who dwells in the Vindhya mountains" which shows the commingling of "orthodox" Hinduism with the beliefs of tribal and mountain people. In this aspect, She is patroness of women, children, and the handicapped.

Tantra in many ways continues and elaborates upon the tradition of the Upanishads. There is a phenomenon in Hindu philosophy known as bandhus (relationships, correspondences) where mundane phenomena are correlated with ritual aspects and actions, or with the Divine. In the Upanishads, it says, "A wise man does not curse the rain for he knows that it is the consummation of the gods' soma sacrifice." In Tantra, each aspect of the sexual act corresponds with a ritual action e.g. "The orgasm is the thunder-clap..."

Every mundane thing may be correlated with something spiritual, including faeces, which is called in Sanskrit, Vishvabhashma "World-Ashes."
