Can terrorists be deradicalized?

These people aren't brainwashed by a cult leader. They're not kept isolated from society at large. They're not kept constantly working on a few hours sleep and eating a diet with very little nutrients to keep them weak in body and mind. They look for a purpose in life because their lives suck. Their lives suck because they suck. So what is offered with 'deradicalization'? They no longer have a purpose in life. They're again reminded that their lives suck and they no longer have someone to blame for it. So what happens next? What purpose do they feel they have in life now?

Even without the Saudis many would get 'ideas'. It might probably help to ban Saudi influence in the West, but it's not as if there's no internet nowadays. And armed with the Qur'an and Hadith alone you can't deny a visible war-like undercurrent Islam teaches. No propaganda à la 'Islam is peace' and 'moderate normal muslims' can ever change that. Not to mention many learn by example.

I think a terrorist should be treated as any other violent criminal. But the great weakness in the West (or Europe) is the principle that all cultures and nationalities are equally valuable and equally welcome. I don't agree with everything he says but I must quote Varg Vikernes:

You deradicalize them by not killing hundreds of thousands of innocent Muslims overseas over the years. They see the renouncement of killing innocents as a two way street. UK needs to deradicalize itself before the terrorists deradicalize themselves. Sending a bomb written "with love from Manchester" is an insane person expecting different results. The UK trying to act like a tough guy to save face. And the cycle of terrorism repeats.

Still, having become so entranced by one's religion one joins such an organisation makes one fundamentally a person of different morality to me.

I still wouldn't want him in my society. Becoming an atheist doesn't make one a humanist. And I know of many muslims who call themselves atheists, but retain a muslim morality and eventually return to Islam.

I also remember people who are former muslim tend to look at converts to Christianity as 'traitors'. Some even would snitch on Christians trying to proselytise in an Arab country where it's against the law. Ah well, the bark isn't as bad as the bite I guess and it depends on how aggressive one would define proselytising. I assume in this case.
