Why so? Making the transition into work can be difficult - no one said otherwise - as you are rehabilitating from a long illness episode but staying at home most likely only aggravates it. Mortimer has shown signs in the past of wanting to do something by applying to job interviews, even if sporadically. If he has struggles with it I would advice him to try out first volunteer work as this can help him acquire skills, build up contacts, and it looks good on the resume. The best part is that it can turn out to be very enjoyable as well for him. He does not loose anything in trying it and can quit it at any moment.
