    Default Byzantine empire was Greek?

In it's golden age the Byzantine or East Roman Empire was vast and multiethnic. We know that in the 7th century Greek became the official language, but were the emperors and elite all Greek or were they as multiethnic as the empire?

Mono-ethnic nations are relatively new and were unknown in concept prior to 19th century.

All empires were multi-ethnic. The Byzantine Empire was as Greek as the Middle Kingdom was Chinese ( with a Manchu, Mongol, Uighur as " Son of heaven" it's not hard to imagine. )
