The academics think that there was a connection with Basque, or Etruscan or Minoan, or all of them, since the island apparently in remote ages was populated from different directions. It's an hystorical fact that the ancient Shardana, one of the sea peoples were the ancient Sardinians. And apparently the sea peoples were in some way related with Minoans and Etruscans.

The Basque hypothesis have also some proofs on his behalf; on the mountains of central Sardinia, where the free Nuragic tribes found shelter from the Roman invasion there are 30-40% of place names that are not in Latin or in actual Sardinian, but they make sense if compared to Basque vocabulary. There is also the DNA similarity between Sardinian and Basques, the haplogroup I2a1 - I-M26 (over 40% of Sardinian population), that in Europe can be found in such high percentages only in Sardinia, southern Corsica, Basque country, Canaries islands and Azores islands.

The new Sarno et al study showed that southern Italian, Sicilian, Cretan, and Aegean islanders are more or less one genetic unit.

Sardinian is the closest to Latin than Italian.

My guess of closeness to Latin is: Sardinian > Italian > Spanish > Romanian > Portuguese > French

Portuguese and French are likely furthest, even though Portuguese is generally close to Spanish. A lot of its forms are clearly removed, like articles and spelling.

For some weird reason, probably it's force of habit, I find easier to read the French than other Romance languages.
