Latvian and Lithuanian are very alive and state languages even. So I don't follow the 'it's as if they're dead'. Latvian is maybe 'only' spoken by 1.7M people, but that's enough for a language to thrive. It's very alive in all of the country (twice the size of Belgium but thinly populated; the greenest country of Europe). "It's useless, so don't bother" is a lame argument. In Belgium only Dutch, French and English are asked for certain jobs. The rest is if you work abroad.

I didn't carefully observe them enough, but Lithuanian is probably
better to learn, from fusional grammatical point of view (I can be
wrong, but by this what I read cursorily, it seems like that).

Yes. Lithuanian is grammatically the most conservative of both languages. Phonologically however Latvian is. Don't ask me how for I don't know. I parrot what I once read.

You also have a cultural reason to find Lithuanian more interesting, because of the history of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

I need to learn regular old Arabic first, as my Arabic knowledge is way too poor it's shameful for the daughter of an Arab. After that I would learn Latin.
