Default Hedgehog 'blown up like a beachball' diagnosed with balloon syndrome

    Balloon syndrome hedgehog is 'popped'

    12 June 2017

Balloon syndrome is caused by gas collecting underneath the skin, often as the result of a traumatic event or infection

A hedgehog that had "blown up like a beach ball" is said to be doing well after a vet "popped" him with a needle.

The male hedgehog, which had inflated to twice its size, was found wandering around in circles by a member of the public in Toll Bar, Doncaster.

The unnamed animal was diagnosed with the rare "balloon syndrome", caused by gas collecting under the skin.

He was taken to a RSPCA centre in Cheshire where a needle was inserted to vent the trapped air.

Bev Panto, head vet at the RSPCA's Stapeley Grange centre, said it was a very unusual syndrome.

    'Mostly air'

"In my career I have seen three or four of these cases and they are very strange every time and quite shocking," she said.

"When you first see them they appear to be very big hedgehogs but when you pick them up they feel so light because they are mostly air."

The RSPCA's Stapeley Grange centre said the hedgehog was now "doing well"

She said the condition only occurs in hedgehogs and was due to their ability to curl up, meaning they have a lot of space under the skin.

In some circumstances air can get trapped under the skin due to an injury or trauma.

"They literally blow up like a balloon," she said.

"The first thing to do is to just pop them. To pop a needle in and drain all that air out."

Ms Panto said the hedgehog was eating well and staff were hopeful of a full recovery.

"It is certainly not out of the woods yet so it's fingers crossed," she added.

    with balloon syndrome

The unhealthy and suffering hedgehog has inflated to twice his usual size

    Telegraph Reporters

    11th June, 2017

A hedgehog which has "blown up like a beach ball" has been rescued by the RSPCA and diagnosed with a severe case of balloon syndrome.

The animal, inflated to twice his size, was wandering around in circles in Toll Bar, Doncaster, when it was spotted by a concerned member of the public.

She told the RSPCA last Monday that the hedgehog was dragging its back leg, had blood on its nose and due to its size might be pregnant.

But when RSPCA Inspector Sandra Dransfield arrived, she could see that the animal was suffering from the rare condition balloon syndrome, when gas collects under the skin of the hedgehog, so it inflates like a balloon.

Ms Dransfield said: "It's the worst case of balloon syndrome I've seen. This poor chap was almost twice its natural size, literally blown up like a beach ball with incredibly taut skin.

    A healthy sized hedgehog

"I took the stricken animal straight to Peak Vets in Sheffield, where he was X-rayed and they released some of the air from under his skin.

"The vet then started him on a course of antibiotics and pain relief. We found him in the nick of time, and I really do hope he pulls through."

Balloon syndrome can be caused by a traumatic event, like an injury, or underlying infection, which releases gas into the cavity under the hedgehog's skin.

The large 1 kg hedgehog has been transferred to the RSPCA's Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in Nantwich, Cheshire.

He will be put under a general anaesthetic to be thoroughly examined and more air released.

He will continue to be treated at the centre for this unusual condition and cared for until he is ready to be returned to the wild.

If you see an animal you have concerns about, the RSPCA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) urges you to call its emergency line on 0300 123 9999.

Help a hedgehog | Top tips to make your garden hedgehog-friendly

    * Cut a five-inch-square hole in the base of your garden fence, or remove a brick from the base of your wall, to let hedgehogs get through

    * Alternatively, replace fences or walls with hedges

    * Don't pave over your garden

    * Encourage insects with a diverse range of plants rich in nectar

    * Leave out meaty cat or dog food

    * Avoid treating your lawn with herbicide

    * Pile up logs to create a habitat for hedgehogs to breed or hibernate

    * Make a compost heap, which can be used as a hedgehog nest

    * Take care when clearing piles of leaves, as hedgehogs may be nesting in them

    * Install a pond with a gently-sloping edge so the hedgehogs can drink but won't fall in and get trapped

    * Avoid using slug pellets, which may be harmful to hedgehogs

    * Be very careful to check that no hedgehogs are within piles of logs and wood before lighting fires on Bonfire Night.
