They live in a region called Hanoverian Wendland, just to the south of Hamburg, and they used to speak one of dialects of Polabian, called Dravano-Polabian. In the 1600s-1700s there were still ca. 15,000 speakers in 120 villages, while in 1890 there were just 585 speakers left (according to the census):
