It's true. Simple as that.
During the days of the Holy Roman Empire, we had a kind of "European union" on the continent, within roughly the same area as the modern core states of the EU. Of course, Germany was the centre and dominated it, just as Germany is dominating the EU today.
The Germans know what their role and destiny is in Europe. They've been doing it for more than a thousand years. Amazing really, if you think of it. Less than a century after the fall of the Third Reich, once again Germany is ruling Europe, and Germans are the most committed Europhiles (because they know this was the only way they could dominate Europe again after the Nazi rule).
