IQ tests obviously measure something valid, because they correlate more strongly with things like academic and career success than anything else we can measure. That said, it's a big mistake to assume that "more IQ equals more smarts" in a linear scale. Plenty of people with high IQ's can't really think for themselves. They might be extremely good at crunching numbers or throwing together a pastiche of learned cliches to write an eloquent wall of text justifying the ideas of someone else, but they can't come up with their own ideas. Or if they do, they come up with ideas that are ludicrous if you look at them with a bit of common sense. That's why I would rather go by my own observations than by an IQ test when judging someone's intellectual worth.
