Without the Mongol invasion, I'm pretty sure Kiev would be the capital city of the Russian Federation today. The Russian Kiev would have took over the Grand Duchy of Tver and the Grand Principalty of Moscow. Ukrainian would be the official Russian language, and both Tolstoy and Dostoevsky would have written their novels in Ukrainian.

Mongol was not an ethnic term originally. Everyone in the Mongol Empire was called Mongol. The concept of a Mongol nation did not exist back then. Most of the Mongol Empire was Turkic-speaking. Look at the successor states: Chagatai (Turk), Ilkhan (Mongol), Yuan (Mongol), Golden Horde (Turk). The Mongols committed genocide on the Iranics of Central Asia. Nowadays it is mostly Turkic-speaking, not Mongolic-speaking.

The name Tatar was given to a variety of unrelated Turkic peoples by the Russians. Even Azeris were called Tatars before. The Volga Tatars in particular probably got their name from the Mongols, but most Tatar groups got their name from the Russians.

Originally the name Tatar was brought in by Mongols since it were them who called some Turkic-speaking tribes Tatars. So Russians simply adopted the term and used it for all Turkic-speaking populations.
