The more diversity of opinion, the better. Depends on what you mean by melting pot. There are different degrees of this. The USA didn't melt into one race of people or even several. However, it became a European melting pot as Europeans melted into each other today so much that the average white Americans is a buffet of European ethnicities. But it didn't melt into a race of triracials of European, African and Amerind ancestry. Culture may have melted more, but not so for the races. I'd say Latin America was more of a melting pot than the USA, and even they didn't melt all the way. So depends on what you mean. Culture or people or both.

Well the past 50 years it is more of melting pot of all people. There were always East Asians and African American involved in American culture from the beginning. Elvis and Jazz came from African American influence. New Orleans was historically more of accepting for blacks and others as you saw a lot of a melting pot there.
