YouTube reveals it now has more than 1.5 BILLION users and says they watch over an hour a day on mobile devices

In just a little over a decade, YouTube has grown from a simple registered domain name to a video-sharing giant - it now has more than 1.5 billion users logging into the site every month.

YouTube is the brainchild of former PayPal workers – Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim.

In February 2005, the founders registered the domain name, began building the sit and two months later, the team uploaded its first video - the 19-second clip was of Karim at the Sand Diego Zoo.

And in just a little over a year later, Google bought the site for $1.65 billion when it had some 700 million views a week.

Today, YouTube is a haven for armature film makers, actors, musicians and more to share their creations with the world.

The new milestone of 1.5 billion users logging in every month was announced at VidCon this week, which is an annual online video conference hosted at the Anaheim Convention Center in California, by YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki.

She had noted that part of the success has been driven by YouTube Red, a subscription service that offers ‘uninterrupted music, ad-free videos and more’.

‘To date, we've launched 37 original series and movies on YouTube Red, and they've generated nearly a quarter billion views,’ Wojcicki shared in a blog post.
