I first learned about Cagots via your thread about them. They remind me of the Burakumin of Japan who still exist today, though officially neither exist (yet their family names or histories often give it away still). Historically they were those who performed professions with the stigma of death around it, like tanners, undertakers but also executioners and they and their descendants were shunned for that.

I also know about a Spanish film, El Verdugo. Now this isn't about a caste of people, but about an executioner and his daughter who seemly is doomed to spinsterhood, until she meets a handsome undertaker.
Even today people don't look that warmly to undertakers. People who say they want to do that profession are considered crazy here.
