I live in the south and although there are many dark ones and brown-skinned ones down here, there are also many light-skinned (known as Red, also yellow). I think they vary and have all those tones even in the same family. We all know black Americans are significantly admixed with European ancestry and it often shows in their facial features, but sometimes it even gives them brown skin when their ancestors may have had very dark skin. It really varies among them. There are those that look closer to Africans as well as those that are mulattoed pretty significantly.

No they dont, most African Americans can already pass in Nigeria, Ghana and such countries, especially those from the Yoruba and Igbo tribes of Nigeria, which Igbo slaves made a good percentage of slaves in America, in fact if you look into African American AncestryDNA results, their top ancestry is in Nigeria, there is also a test called African DNA where they can pinpoint what tribe they hail from, the ones I have seen were linked to the Igbo tribe of Nigeria
